Stripe in Pakistan: Why It Is Not Available and What Actually Works

By UpToNova Team · August 9, 2026 · Updated August 19, 2026 · 6 min read

Stripe does not operate in Pakistan. You cannot sign up with a Pakistani business, a Pakistani bank account, or a Pakistani CNIC. That has not changed, and no amount of VPN use will change it — Stripe verifies the legal entity, not your IP address.

This guide, from the UpToNova Team, covers why Pakistan is excluded, what Pakistani freelancers and e-commerce sellers use instead, and the one route that gets you a genuine, compliant Stripe account.

Why Stripe is not available in Pakistan

Stripe operates in a limited list of countries and expands slowly. The constraint is not technical, it is regulatory and risk-based:

  • Banking and settlement rails. Stripe must be able to settle funds into a local bank account under a framework its banking partners accept. Pakistan is not currently in that set.
  • KYC and sanctions screening. Stripe underwrites every merchant. Operating in a jurisdiction requires compliance infrastructure it has not built for Pakistan.
  • Chargeback and fraud exposure. Card networks price risk by market. Stripe enters markets where it can manage that exposure profitably.

None of this is a judgement on you as a business owner. It is a country-level decision, and it applies equally to a first-week freelancer and an established agency.

What does not work — and why people keep trying it

Before the workable route, the shortcuts that end in frozen funds:

  • VPN plus a fake address. Stripe verifies the entity behind the account: registration documents, tax ID, bank account, and beneficial owner. A VPN changes none of that. Accounts opened this way are typically closed during review, and pending balances can be held for months.
  • Borrowing a friend's US or UK account. The account holder is legally the merchant. You have no ownership of the funds, no recourse in a dispute, and you are exposing them to liability for your business.
  • Buying a "verified" Stripe account. These are almost always someone else's identity. Beyond the fraud exposure, the account is closed the moment ownership changes are detected.

What Pakistani businesses actually use today

Realistically, most Pakistani freelancers and sellers are on one of these:

  • Payoneer — widely used in Pakistan, well understood by local banks, good for receiving payouts from marketplaces and agency clients. It is a receiving tool, not a card-processing gateway: your customer cannot enter a card on your checkout page.
  • Wise — strong for multi-currency receiving and low-cost conversion. Again, receiving rather than checkout.
  • Marketplace payouts — Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon and similar handle the card processing themselves and pay you out. You inherit their fees and their rules.
  • Local gateways — fine for domestic PKR collection, but they will not let you charge a customer in the US or EU in their own currency.

The pattern: every one of these solves receiving money. None solves taking card payments on your own site, in your customer's currency, under your own brand. That is the gap Stripe fills, and it is why so many Pakistani businesses hit a ceiling.

If you are comparing these in detail, our Wise guide for non-residents covers the receiving side.

The route that works: a US LLC

Stripe supports US businesses. A US LLC is a US business — and there is no requirement that its owner be American, live in the US, or ever visit.

Concretely, you need four things:

  1. A US LLC. Wyoming or Delaware. No citizenship, residency, visa, or travel required. Filing typically completes in a few days.
  2. An EIN. The IRS tax ID for the company, obtained on Form SS-4. You do not need an SSN or ITIN — foreign owners apply through an alternative process. This is the step that takes longest, usually a few weeks. See our EIN guide.
  3. A US business bank account. Opened remotely with providers that serve foreign-owned LLCs. Our banking guide covers who accepts non-residents.
  4. A Stripe account registered to the LLC, using the EIN and the US bank account.

This is not a loophole. You are genuinely operating through a US company, which is why the account survives review — unlike every shortcut above. Full walkthrough: setting up Stripe with a US LLC.

What it costs, honestly

UpToNova charges $200 flat, one time, plus the state filing fee (Wyoming $102.40 / Delaware $110). That includes the state filing, the EIN without an SSN, one year of registered agent, an attorney-reviewed operating agreement, a US bank account walkthrough, and a compliance calendar. No subscription and no renewal surprise.

Ongoing, budget for the state annual report (Wyoming's minimum is low; Delaware charges a flat $400 franchise tax) and registered agent renewal.

The obligations nobody mentions

Owning a US LLC creates real filing duties, and this is where cheap providers leave you exposed:

  • Form 5472 plus a pro-forma 1120, every year. A foreign-owned single-member LLC must file these even with zero income and zero tax owed. The penalty for missing it starts at $25,000. See our Form 5472 guide.
  • US tax is not automatic — but "no tax" is not "no filing". Whether you owe US federal income tax depends on whether you have Effectively Connected Income. Read do foreign-owned US LLCs pay US tax.
  • Your Pakistani obligations do not disappear. Income you bring home is still assessable in Pakistan, and foreign-currency inflows are subject to State Bank of Pakistan rules. Speak to a Pakistani tax adviser about how to receive and declare it correctly — we handle the US side, not the Pakistani side.

How long the whole thing takes

  • LLC formation: typically a few days.
  • EIN without an SSN: usually a few weeks — the real bottleneck.
  • Bank account: days after the EIN arrives.
  • Stripe approval: usually quick once the LLC, EIN and bank account are in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Stripe in Pakistan with a VPN?
No. Stripe verifies the registered entity, its tax ID and its bank account. A VPN changes your IP, not your paperwork, and accounts opened this way are closed during review with funds held.

Is forming a US LLC legal for a Pakistani citizen?
Yes. There is no citizenship or residency requirement to own a US LLC. What matters is that you meet the US filing obligations and declare income correctly in Pakistan.

Do I need to travel to the US?
No. Formation, EIN, banking and Stripe are all completed remotely.

Do I need an SSN or ITIN?
No. Foreign owners obtain an EIN through an alternative IRS process without either.

Can I keep using Payoneer as well?
Yes, and many people do. Payoneer for marketplace payouts, Stripe for direct card payments on your own site. They solve different problems.

Will Stripe close my account for being Pakistani?
Not if the merchant is a genuine US LLC that you own and disclose. Stripe requires beneficial-owner disclosure; declaring yourself as a Pakistani owner of a US company is expected and normal.
